1. To be Hard as Nails

To be very tough/strong.

  • He’s also hard as nails, nobody would dare fight him!

2. To be Down in the Dumps

To be depressed or sad.

  • She’s very down in the dumps at the moment and I wouldn’t blame her, she’s lost her job, house and car.

3. To be Pissed off

To be angry.

  • Don’t ever speak to me again like that, I’m very pissed off at you!

4. To be Knackered

To be very tired.

  • I’m absolutely knackered, I’ve been running around all day.

5. To be on Cloud 9/Over the Moon

To be very happy.

  • I can’t believe it, I won the lottery! I’m over the moon!
  • I have everything I want in life, a big house, a nice family. I’m on cloud 9.

6. To be at the end of Your Tether

To be losing your patience.

  • I’m at the end of my tether with these kids, all they do is run around shouting.
