Introducing our Newest Teachifyer - Sophie Reid!

Hi Guys!

In today’s blog post we are going to talk to the newest member of the Teachify team, Sophie Reid!

So Sophie, to begin with where are you from?

I’m from Kilkenny in Ireland

And how long have you been teaching?

I’ve been teaching for 3 years.

Great! So what brings you to Spain?

When I was 14 I read a book called The Shadow of the Wind (La Sombra del Viento) and fell in love with the idea of living in Spain. I started studying Spanish history and when I went to university I got the option to start learning the Spanish language as well. Because of this I had to complete an Erasmus year in Spain, which I did in Alcalá de Henares in Madrid. That decided it for me! Spain was the place for me and I moved back as soon as I finished university!

Wow! And what do you enjoy doing in your free time?

I love to cook, to eat and to explore the tapas bars of Madrid! I also do boxing and yoga classes every week along with spending plenty of time with my friends and reading as well.

So you're a bit of a foodie then? Tell us what your favourite food is along with your favourite Spanish Tapa.

Anything my mum cooks really. My favourite Tapa is Croquetas specifically at Casa Julio, the best in Madrid!

Who is your hero and why?

My dad (is that cheesey?) He grew up during the Troubles in Ireland which was a very difficult time but he managed to grow from this and made it his goal to help people overcome prejudices and build better lives. He is also really funny, loves to offer (really useful) advice – especially over a beer or glass of wine and really does not care what anyone thinks of him!

Do you have a hidden talen you would like to share?

I’m a really good baker? Is that a hidden talent..?

I'm sure that counts! So tell us what motivates you at work?

Learning Spanish in university was really difficult because they almost immediately put us into the same groups as the advanced speakers. I remember the feeling of fear in case the professor called on you to speak or the boredom of classes when you don’t understand what is happening. My goal is always to create a fun and comfortable environment for my students so they don’t feel this way – hopefully they feel included and want to participate.

Great! So more importantly - what is your go to Karaoke song?

It would have to be Shoop by Salt-N-Pepa

And what annoys you most?

Construction noise! Why can I never escape the banging and drilling in Madrid? I swear it follows me!

If you won the lottery, what would you do?

I would buy a house in Ireland for my parents, buy a house (or two) in Spain for me. I would also try to travel as much as I could! I feel like there is still so much more to see and experience and the lottery would definitely help with that!

What are you looking forward to most now you have joined the Teachify family?

I am looking forward to being part of a small company that really invests in their workers. I have already received so much help, advice and benefits from working in this company compared to bigger ones. I am also looking forward to taking advantage of working online and having a more flexible schedule.

What is your advice to our followers when it comes to learning English?

Try not to be nervous! It is always difficult to do but you will never improve if you don’t push past the fear or embarrassment and start trying to speak to people. We all started out somewhere and your level is always better than you think it is! Also watching netflix in English always helps!

Great! Anything else you would like to add?

Learning English should be challenging but it should also be interesting and hopefully fun too! It can be difficult but it is always better to keep trying!

Great, thanks for your time Sophie!
