When to use Such vs So
In today’s post we are going to look at when to use Such vs So. This can be quite a tricky one for EFL learners as although these two words are used in similar contexts, usually used to mean very, there are some slight differences in the way that we use them.
The main thing that we need to bear in mind is that such is a determiner and so is an adverb. Therefore when we use so in a sentence we need to use the formula So + Adjective eg That car is so fast.
When we are using such in a sentence we need to follow the formula Such + Adjective + Noun eg That is such a fast car.
Some more examples:
- You are so beautiful/ You are such a beautiful person.
- He’s so intelligent/ He’s such an intelligent child.
- They’re so scared/They’re such scared people.
- That’s beach is so nice/That’s such a nice beach.
- That pizza is so burnt/ That’s such a burnt pizza.
- That cat is so cute/ That is such a cute cat.
- That building is so tall/ That’s such a tall building.
