Jack's Music Box: Leon Bridges - River

Hi Guys!

In this week’s edition of Jack’s Music Boxwe are going to be taking a look at River by Leon Bridges.

About the Artist

Originally born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1989, Bridges moved around with his family a bit before they eventually settled in Fort Worth Texas.

Bridges originally taught himself the guitar so he could accompany his own lyrics. After playing at numerous open mic nights around Fort Worth, Bridges was eventually signed by Columbia Records in 2014.

Bridges earlier style was reminiscent of 50s/60s soul and doo wop which is showcased on his debut album Coming Home released in 2015.

From Bridges’ popularity rose, supporting big acts like Pharrell Williams, he even performed for Michelle and Barack Obama at the White House!

About the Song

For this week’s song I chose River from Bridges’ debut album Coming Home. I chose the song because it is a slow acoustic song with simple lyrics so it should be appropriate for all levels.

The Lyrics

Been traveling these wide roads for so long,
My heart’s been far from you
Ten-thousand miles gone.

Oh, I wanna come near and give every part of me
But there is blood on my hands
And my lips are unclean.

In my darkness I remember
Momma’s words reoccur to me
«Surrender to the good Lord
And he’ll wipe your slate clean«

Take me to your river
I wanna go
Oh, go on
Take me to your river
I wanna know

Tip me in your smooth water
I go in
As a man with many crimes
Come up for air
As my sins flow down the Jordan

Oh, I wanna come near and give
Every part of me
But there is blood on my hands
And my lips are unclean

Take me to your river
I wanna go
Go on
Take me to your river
I wanna know

I wanna go, wanna go, wanna go
I wanna know, wanna know, wanna know
Wanna go, wanna go, wanna go
Wanna know, wanna know, wanna know
Wanna go, wanna go, wanna go
Wanna know, wanna know, wanna know

Take me to your river
I wanna go
Lord, please let me know
Take me to your river
I wanna know
