Who are the Arctic Monkeys?
The Arctic Monkeys are a band that need little introduction, they were perhaps the first great band of the internet age.
Initially the band received great exposure through online platforms such as Myspace and eventually became one of the most hyped bands in the United Kingdom with their 2006 debut album Whatever People Say I am, That’s What I’m Not becoming the fastest debut album in UK history selling over 350,000 copies in its first week.
With instant classics such as I Bet That You Look Good on the Dancefloor and When the Sun Goes Down, Whatever People Say I am, That’s What I’m Not remains a modern classic and, for many, one of the greatest albums of all time.
Since 2018
Why I like this band
The songs on the album deal with typical teenage life in the UK and were immensely relatable for many and resulted with the band becoming the band of a generation.
This week’s song is Mardy Bum, one of the most popular and beloved songs from Whatever People Say I am, That’s What I’m Not. This singalong classic details an argument between the singer and his girlfriend.
For some this may be quite a challenging song to understand as it is sung in their native Sheffield dialect.
Nevertheless, I selected this song as I think it is a good idea to allow yourselves to be exposed to as many different English accents and dialects as possible, there is also a lot of really interesting slang used in this song. Below I have included a link to the song along with the lyrics.
Interesting vocabulary used
Mardy Bum: Yorkshire slang for somebody who is in a bad mood, Unco-operatative or ‘sulky’
Cuddle: Synonymous with ‘Hug.’
Got The Face On: Somebody who looks or seems upset/angry.
I Can’t be Arsed: I can’t be bothered, I don’t want to do it .
Right Hard: Yorkshire slang for ‘Very Hard’
Pulling that Silent Disappointment Face: Making that Silent Disappointment Face

Mardy Bum Song Lyrics
Now then Mardy Bum
I see your frown
And it’s like looking down the barrel of a gun
And it goes off
And out come all these words
Oh there’s a very pleasant side to you
A side I much prefer
It’s one that laughs and jokes around
Remember cuddles in the kitchen
Yeah, to get things off the ground
And it was up, up and away
Oh, but it’s right hard to remember
That on a day like today when you’re all argumentative
And you’ve got the face on
Well now then Mardy Bum
Oh I’m in trouble again, aren’t I
I thought as much
Cause you turned over there
Pulling that silent disappointment face
The one that I can’t bare
Can’t we laugh and joke around
Remember cuddles in the kitchen
Yeah, to get things off the ground
And it was up, up and away
Oh, but it’s right hard to remember
That on a day like today when you’re all argumentative
And you’ve got the face on
Yeah I’m sorry I was late
Well I missed the train
And then the traffic was a state
And I can’t be arsed to carry on in this debate
That reoccurs ,oh when you say I don’t care
Well of course I do, yeah I clearly do!
So laugh and joke around
Remember cuddles in the kitchen
Yeah, to get things off the ground
And it was up, up and away
Still it’s right hard to remember
That on a day like today when you’re all argumentative
And you’ve got the face on
